The Airline & Baggage Breakdown
Navigating European airlines requires strategy. While their ticket prices are unmatched, European baggage limits are strictly enforced and often smaller than typical American carrier rules. Here is how we flew across four different airlines this summer:
1. Norse Atlantic Airways (The Transatlantic Budget Champion)
Wine and Beer included in Premium Cabin with 56 seats available for reservations.
The Route: Orlando (MCO) ➡️ London Gatwick (LGW) | Round-Trip
The Fares: Economy pricing ranges between $150 - $400’s each way / Premium pricing starts in the 400’s each way.
The Vibe: This is a newer low-budget airline (built out of the former Norwegian Air framework) that is worth every single penny you save. Truly, no other airline can compete with their transatlantic pricing—it feels comparable to JetBlue or Icelandair but still less $$.
Seating Tiers: They offer a Premium cabin featuring larger seats with a comfortable, deep recline (meals and drinks are included). Economy features food and drink for purchase. A massive win? It’s a direct flight, meaning you completely avoid exhausting layovers.
Norse Baggage Rules: Norse does not charge for hand luggage, but check your dimensions carefully so you aren't forced to pay a penalty to check them at the gate!

2. Condor (The Old-School Leisure Elite)
Condor also offers flights from the US to Europe
The Route: London Gatwick (LGW) ➡️ Frankfurt (FRA) ➡️ Budapest (BUD)
The Flight Details: Departs Gatwick at 15:35 ➡️ Arrives Frankfurt ➡️ Departs Frankfurt at 20:10 ➡️ Arrives Budapest at 21:45.
The Vibe: Condor is a fantastic German leisure airline that you should never overlook. Because our travel day was spanning over 24 hours since leaving Orlando, I strategically booked Business Class here. Even on short European legs, a Condor upgrade maintains that classic, old-school travel elegance. I was served real champagne in an actual glass, enjoyed great food - in plates and branded REAL silverware- and drinks (all included), and was even bid farewell with a small sample box of gourmet German chocolate truffles.
Condor Baggage Rules:
Cabin Baggage: Max 55 × 40 × 23 cm (22 × 16 × 9 in)

3. Ryanair (The Ultra-Low-Cost Fast Track)
Ryanair flies to 235 destinations in over 36 countries.
The Route: Budapest (BUD) ➡️ London Stansted (STN)
The Vibe: Ryanair is definitely not for the faint of heart, but absolutely nobody can beat their lightning-fast pace and jaw-dropping prices. I’ve scored last-minute base rates with them in the past for as low as €2 plus tax (€20 total)! Boarding is usually chaotic, but it gets you safely from Point A to Point B.
The Catch:Everything is an add-on. Seat selection, boarding order, baggage, and water are all extra. Furthermore, they frequently fly into smaller secondary airports (like Stansted) that are located further outside major city centers. Always budget and plan ahead for your ground transit after landing!
Ryanair Baggage Rules (Strictly Enforced!):
Free Personal Item: Max 40 × 30 × 20 cm (15.7 × 11.8 × 7.9 in) — Must fit under the seat.
Paid Priority Carry-on: Max 55 × 40 × 20 cm (21.6 × 15.7 × 7.8 in) * Weight Limit: Strictly 10 kg (22 lbs).

Train & Ground Transportation Logistics
Once your feet hit the tarmac in Europe, the real financial magic happens on the rails. Here is the exact ground transit network we used to navigate England, Scotland, and Austria. BUT Don’t disregard the convenience of getting an UBER through your regular App. You can save time and money depending on how many are traveling in your party.
🚖 Savvy Travel Tip: Beware of Transit Touts!
When arriving at major European airports or train stations, never accept a ride from individuals offering taxi services inside the terminal halls or platforms. These unauthorized "touts" or freelance drivers target tired, jet-lagged travelers. They often charge inflated rates, insist on cash, and operate without proper commercial transport insurance.
🇬🇧 London Airport-to-City Train Outline
PAY for public transportation at the barriers by taping your phone (apple pay) or a credit card. Must scan the same $ used, when exiting.
From London Heathrow (LHR):
Heathrow Express (The Speed Play): Non-stop straight into London Paddington Station in just 15 minutes. It’s the most comfortable and fastest route, but carries a high walk-up price unless you pre-book online weeks in advance.
The Elizabeth Line (The Best Balance): London’s state-of-the-art cross-city line. It cuts right through central hubs like Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, and Liverpool Street. It takes under 40 minutes and requires zero tube transfers.
The Piccadilly Line Tube (The Budget Play): The traditional underground subway line. It takes 50 to 60 minutes to reach central stops like Piccadilly Circus or King's Cross St. Pancras. Slower, but incredibly cheap.
From London Gatwick (LGW):
Gatwick Express (The Dedicated Route): Non-stop straight from the South Terminal into London Victoria Station in 30 minutes flat.
Southern Railway (The Savvy Alternative): Runs the same route to London Victoria, making just a couple of brief stops (like Clapham Junction). It only adds 5–10 minutes to the journey but saves you a chunk of cash.
Thameslink (The Cross-City Shortcut): Perfect if you want to bypass Victoria entirely. It heads straight to London Bridge (in 28 minutes), Blackfriars, Farringdon, and St. Pancras International.
From London Stansted (STN):
Stansted Express: A direct train running every 15 minutes straight into London Liverpool Street Station. Tickets cost around £21, where you can instantly connect to the central Tube and bus networks.
💳 Kairym's Local Transit Rule
For local buses and Tubes in London - and train transport to/from all airports- you do not need to buy paper or digital tickets! This just stresses your schedule with any unanticipated delays.
TAP your contactless credit card or Apple Pay at the barrier.
Crucial Note: Each family member needs to tap a different credit card. The system will protectively block the same card from being tapped twice in a row at the same barrier.

The Itinerary: London King's Cross ➡️ Edinburgh Waverley | Round-Trip
The Cost: £69 round-trip depending on peak or off peak travel schedule (Bonus: Children under 17 travel for half-price!)
Logistics Note: Requires advance ticket purchasing. SEAT RESERVATIONS ENCOURAGED! On our return leg (7:00 AM departure from Edinburgh), we rode back to King's Cross, hopped right onto the Northern/Victoria Underground line to Farringdon, and swapped directly to the Elizabeth Line straight to Heathrow Airport.
🚘 The Airport-to-Airport Transfer Hack
(Heathrow ↔️ Gatwick)
When shifting between Heathrow and Gatwick with the kids, I heavily researched public transit and coach buses. However, by the time you calculate individual bus tickets and extra baggage fees for three people, it adds up fast—plus, we were completely exhausted for multiple train transfers.
The Fix: We booked a private car through Airport Taxi Transfers. It turned out to be more comfortable, completely private, and actually saved us about £50 compared to individual bus bookings for three passengers carrying backpacks and carry-ons. Plus, it saved us 20 minutes of travel time.

Switzerland to Austria
Beautiful ride among the Alps and Lake Constance
The Route: Zurich Flughafen (ZRH Airport) ➡️ Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Zürich HB) ➡️ Feldkirch Bahnhof (Austria)
The Move: Pre-purchase your tickets online via the Austrian ÖBB app ahead of time to lock in their cheap Sparschiene rates. I suggest reserving your seats. You can catch the train directly beneath the Zurich Airport terminal, connect smoothly through Zurich's main station, and enjoy a breathtaking mountain train ride straight into Austria.

The Accommodations & Stay Reviews
Golden Rules for Booking European Hotels
Before looking at where we stayed, keep these four Europe-specific hotel realities in mind:
Rooms are sold by bed space: They calculate occupancy strictly. A twin room is priced dynamically differently than a double bed room.
Watch the bathrooms: Many European budget properties feature shared washrooms or a separate "Water Closet" (WC) down the hall. Always check for an En-Suite (private attached bathroom) in your search filters if that is a dealbreaker for you. It is for me!
Air Conditioning is a luxury: True climate control is not standard in Europe and will drastically affect hotel pricing. Check for A/C before booking summer travel! I can assure you that there will be no A/C in a rental property.
Trust your booking platforms: I only book through Booking.com, Airbnb, or Amex Travel. I have fallen victim to fraudulent travel sites and false bookings in the past. These three platforms offer flexible cancellation policies, secure transactions, and rapid customer service if anything goes sideways. 1. Budapest: B&B Budapest City Hotel
Dates: June 8 – June 10 (2 Nights)
The Review: Incredibly competitively priced with amazing eclectic, modern design touches. It is clean, features a great gym, a stunning rooftop bar/restaurant, and sits directly across the street from public transit lines and the Danube River. It's roughly a 1-mile scenic walk to major historic landmarks.
Mom Tip: Breakfast is an optional add-on here—buy it! It is completely worth the convenience before a long day of walking.
2. London: Riu Plaza London Victoria
The Review: This high-demand hotel handles bookings almost exclusively through Booking.com, and it fills up fast. My husband surprised me with this booking while I was staying with my Highschool bff who is also my daughter’s Godmother. For London’s typically sky-high prices, this property offers an incredibly reasonable rate given its pristine cleanliness and unbeatable location. He booked a double twin room for my daughter and me.
The Location Win: Victoria Station is hands-down the best home base for a walking tour. You can walk straight to Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey, and jump on an Uber Boat, Tube, or bus for everything else.
The Best Part: A massive, spectacular breakfast buffet is fully included in your stay!
3. Edinburgh: YOTEL Edinburgh
Dates: June 15 – June 17 (2 Nights)
The Review: A highly interesting, ultra-modern hotel located just 10 minutes on foot from major historical sites, wrapped around local shops and restaurants. Check-in is entirely automated via touch-screen computers (though staff are always standing by to help). They feature an on-site bar, gym, and free self-serve coffee and tea 24 hours a day.
The Room: Excellent for families. We stayed in a Family Room featuring a comfortable double bed and a twin-size bunk bed. Note that the bathroom has a quirky, minimalist airport-style pod layout framed by glass, but it works great and is completely private. (Note: Breakfast is not included but can be purchased).
4. Edinburgh (Final Night): Mount Royal Hotel Edinburgh by The Unlimited Collection
Dates: June 17 - June 18
The Review: I used my Amex Points to book this family room for our final night because we had to be at the Waverley train station by 6:00 AM, and this hotel sits directly across the street. It was a clear tier upgrade from the YOTEL, though the historical layout means the living quarters are a bit smaller and more traditional.
The Highlight: Their gorgeous on-site restaurant features massive, full-length windows looking directly out at Edinburgh Castle and the Scott Writers' Monument. The prices were fantastic, and they serve the absolute best Haggis Croquettes you will ever taste!
5. Feldkirch, Austria: Old Town Pedestrian Flat (Airbnb)
The Location: Feldkirch Altstadt (Old Town) , Vorarlberg
The Review: Feldkirch is a breathtaking, medieval historic town right on the borders of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Airbnb options inside the historic old town walls are incredibly rare, but this flat was a total dream.
The Setup: This gorgeous second-floor apartment sat directly above a cobblestone pedestrian street, looking right out at the historic Rathaus (Town Hall). We were steps from parks, local bars, boutique shops, and the famous Schattenburg Castle. The space was huge: a fully equipped kitchen, a massive beautifully crafted dining table, a laundry room, and two oversized bedrooms featuring American-sized beds (one room with a queen and two twins; the other with two queens). It was the perfect home base to wrap up an unforgettable summer!
6. London Gatwick (Final Night): Hampton by Hilton London Gatwick Airport
The Review: To play it safe before our transatlantic flight home, we spent our final night back at Gatwick. I used my Hilton Honors points for this booking, and it was airport convenience at its absolute best.
The Location Win: This hotel is literally located right across from the check-in desks of the North Terminal. You cannot get any closer!
The Experience: The rooms were incredibly clean and comfortable, and they include a fantastic, hot breakfast buffet to fuel you up before travel. Best of all, staying here gave us quick, effortless access to the airport trains so we could zip back into the city center for one last leisurely day. We spent the afternoon walking, visiting more historical sites, and I even got to meet up with my best friend for a wonderful farewell dinner.
