New York in Neutrals: A Savvy Style Diary
One carry-on. One unforgettable weekend. Zero outfit regrets.
My son and I flew up, nonstop, from Sarasota to NYC -with one of our fave airlines, Jet Blue- to watch his sister perform at Lincoln Center with her high school choir. New York greeted us in the upper thirties and climbed into the upper sixties by the time we left — the kind of spring weather that demands layers, versatility, and a very intentional carry-on. Because traveling light is what I do best! Here is exactly how I packed for it.
✨ The Savvy Rule
Simple accessories and coordinated colors make getting ready easy — and leave room for souvenirs in your carry-on.
The Wardrobe
Everything was built around a neutral palette so every piece worked with every other piece. No outfit anxiety. No wasted space.
Neutral wool belted trench coat, A-line silhouette. The anchor of every look — polished enough for Lincoln Center, warm enough for a brisk morning walk.
Floral triangle pashmina in creams and light browns. Worn as a scarf, a shawl, or a wrap on the flight. The single most versatile piece I brought.
Three French berets — off-white, camel, and black. The fastest way to change a look without changing an outfit. Compact, chic, and endlessly useful.
Three short dresses — light brown, denim blue, black. Each layered with neutral under-shirts and leggings. On warm afternoons the layers came off. On cold evenings they went back on.
One pair of high-rise bell bottom jeans with two sheer blouses. I am not a jeans person — but for unpredictable cold, nothing beats them. The bell bottom silhouette gives the look a timeless vintage charm.
One pair of gold cowgirl boots. Comfortable enough for hours on the streets of Manhattan. Distinctive enough to elevate every outfit from breakfast to a night out. One pair of shoes. That is all you need.
The Beauty Kit
Everything earned its place. Nothing was extra.
Bobbi Brown SPF Tinted Serum Foundation — skin protection and coverage in one step
Neutral eyeshadow palette — the dark brown doubles as eyeliner with a thin brush
Brown contouring stick
Blush stick that doubles as a lip tint — cheeks and lips in one product
Two shades of Maybelline 24-Hour Matte Liquid Lipstick
CeraVe travel cleansing soap and nighttime moisturizer
The Jewelry: Put It On and Forget It
One pair of gold and pearl earrings by Kendra Scott. Two - Three gold necklaces with my initials put on before leaving home and never taken off. When your jewelry is simple, classic, and gold-toned, it works with everything and you never have to think about it again. One less decision. One less thing to pack. One less thing to lose.
The Moment That Made It All Worth It
We took the AirTrain from JFK to Jamaica Station, hopped on the Long Island Railroad, and rode straight into Penn Station — faster and cheaper than any cab. My 12-year-old read every sign and made every transfer without hesitation. That quiet confidence is exactly why I travel with my kids the way I do.
And then we watched his sister stand on the stage at Lincoln Center and sing.
When you are not worried about what to wear, you are fully present for the moments that matter.
That is the whole point. 🗽
