Packing for Success: Carry-on

Your 9-Day European Adventure

A guide to traveling light, staying safe, and blending in.

🛂 The "Lifeline": Your Money Belt

In Europe, pickpocketing is common in tourist areas. Your money belt is your portable safe.

  • How to wear it: Under your clothes, around your waist.

  • What stays in it: Passport, main credit card, and the bulk of your cash.

  • What stays in your pocket: A "daily" wallet with a small amount of cash for snacks or souvenirs.

  • Pro-Tip: Never reach into your money belt in public. If you need to access it, go to a restroom or private area.

🎒 Bag 1: The Personal Item (Backpack or Tote)

Keep this with you at your seat during the flight. It should contain your essentials and "just in case" items.

Electronics & Essentials

  • Power: Phone charger + 1 wireless magnetic power bank.

  • International Plug Adapter (ESSENTIAL): US plugs do not fit in European outlets.

    • The "Universal" All-in-One: We recommend a universal adapter that has sliders for Type C (Continental Europe) and Type G (UK/Ireland).

    • USB Ports: Look for an adapter that has built-in USB-A and USB-C ports. This allows you to charge your phone, tablet, and power bank all from a single outlet—very helpful in older hotels with limited plugs!

  • Adapter vs. Converter (Know the Difference):

    • Adapters: Simply change the shape of the plug. Most modern tech (phones, tablets, cameras, and laptops) are Dual-Voltage (check the fine print on the brick for "100-240V").[8] These only need a simple adapter.

    • Converters: Change the actual electricity. DO NOT PLUG a standard US hair dryer, straightener, or steamer into a simple adapter—it will likely smoke, break, or blow a fuse.

    • Pro-Tip: Most European hotels provide hair dryers. If you must bring a straightener, ensure it is specifically labeled "Dual-Voltage" or leave it at home.

  • Tech: Tablet or camera (Laptops are discouraged to save weight).

  • Hydration: Reusable water bottle (Empty it before security!).

  • Weather: Small umbrella or a packable rain jacket.

  • Shopping: 1 Packable Tote (Most European stores charge for bags or don't offer them at all).

The "In-Flight" Essentials

  • Change of Clothes: 1 set of underwear, 1 shirt, and lightweight pants (in case you want to freshen up or your luggage is delayed).

  • Comfort: 1 fleece or sweater, hat, and sunglasses.

Toiletries (TSA Compliant)

  • Note: All liquids/gels must be under 3oz (100ml) and fit in one clear, quart-sized bag.

  • Shampoo/Conditioner/Soap

  • Toothbrush + Toothpaste

  • Deodorant & Personal hygiene items

  • Makeup

First Aid Pouch

  • Prescription medications (9-day supply + 2 extra days).

  • Pain relief (Ibuprofen/Acetaminophen).

  • Allergy meds (Benadryl, Zyrtec, or Claritin).

  • Band-aids.

🧳 Bag 2: The Carry-On Suitcase

Maximum Size: 22in x 14in x 9in
We highly recommend not checking a bag. A carry-on ensures you don't lose luggage during connections and makes navigating cobblestone streets much easier.

Smart Packing Tips

  • The "Expand" Trick: You can expand your bag and check it on the return flight if you buy too many souvenirs.

  • Dress Code: Europeans generally dress "smart-casual." Avoid very short shorts or athletic wear to blend in better.

  • Save Space: Use packing cubes or vacuum bags.

  • The Roll Method: Roll your clothes instead of folding them to prevent wrinkles and save space.

  • Footwear: Wear your heaviest sneakers/walking shoes on the plane to save space in the bag.
