🇬🇧 Traveling to the UK? Here is How to Get Your ETA
Planning a trip to London or a road trip through the English countryside? While U.S. citizens don't need a formal visa for short stays, the UK has introduced a new digital requirement called the ETA. It’s quick, digital, and essential for your summer travels!
The Basics
Cost: £20 (approx. $26) per person.
Validity: 2 years (or until your passport expires).
Who needs it? Everyone, including babies and children.
Processing Time: Most are approved in minutes, but it can take up to 3 working days.
Step 1: Download the "UK ETA" App
While you can apply on the GOV.UK website, the easiest way is via the official UK ETA app (available on the Apple App Store and Google Play). The app allows you to scan your passport and take your digital photo directly from your phone.
Step 2: Scan Your Passport
Open the app and take a clear photo of your passport's photo page. The app will then ask you to scan the biometric chip in your passport.
Tip: Remove your phone case and place your phone directly on the front or back cover of your passport until it "beeps" or vibrates.
Step 3: Take a "Liveness" Face Scan
Follow the on-screen prompts to scan your face. This is a quick security measure to prove you are a real person. If you are applying for your children, you will need to scan their faces too (unless they are under 9 years old).
Step 4: Answer the Safety Questions
You’ll be asked a few brief questions regarding:
Contact details (address and phone number).
Job details (optional).
Criminality and security background checks.
Step 5: Pay the £20 Fee
You can pay securely via the app using a credit or debit card. Remember, each traveler needs their own separate application and fee.
Step 6: Wait for Your Confirmation
You will receive an email confirmation with your 16-digit ETA reference number. You don't need to print anything out! The ETA is digitally linked to your passport. When you scan your passport at the airline check-in or the UK border, it will show up automatically.
⚠️ Kairym’s Traveler Tips
Double Check the Numbers: Ensure your passport number is entered exactly right. If there is a typo, your ETA won't link, and you might be stuck at the airport!
Apply Early: Don't wait until the morning of your flight. Aim to do this at least one week before you head to the airport.
Dual Citizens: If you or anyone in your group holds a British or Irish passport, you do not need an ETA—just travel on that passport!
